Charnos

The brand, Charnos, began in 1935 as a hosiery company that became known for being innovators of new ideas. Through the 1950s the company was the first British company to market both Stretch and Run Resist Stockings. In 1958, Charnos started to introduce lingerie to its hosiery lines with a range including slips, panties, négligées and nightgowns. But it is for its hosiery that Charnos is best known and the company’s technological advances still impact on our lives today. In the ’60s, a new knitting machine produced a stocking in four minutes, half the previous time. Charnos was also instrumental in developing a seam-free stocking and was an early introducer of the concept of tights. The advent of Lycra and, in the 1990s, the development of Lycra 3D, which was a new way of knitting Lycra, led to Charnos installing new machines which could produce fully shaped knitted garments. Today Charnos hosiery is a staple of the wardrobes of women the world over.
